Journey of God’s Grace

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:10
When we look back on our lives, we often remember the decisions we made, the struggles we endured, the people who helped us, and the opportunities that came our way. But behind all of these is a greater truth: we are where we are because of God’s grace.

The Christian life is not ultimately a story about how faithfully we held on to God. It is the story of how faithfully He has held on to us.

What Is God’s Grace?

Grace is God’s undeserved favor toward sinners. It is not something we earn through good works, religious activity, sacrifice, or moral effort. Grace is freely given by God to those who could never make themselves worthy of Him.

Paul writes:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9

Salvation leaves no room for pride. We cannot say that we saved ourselves or that we were more deserving than others. Scripture says that apart from Christ, we were “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).

A spiritually dead person cannot make himself alive.

Yet Scripture continues:

“But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.”
— Ephesians 2:4–5

God acted. God showed mercy. God gave life.

That is grace.

Grace Finds Us and Changes UsGod’s grace does not merely forgive us and leave us unchanged. The same grace that saves us begins transforming our lives.

Paul writes:

“For the grace of God has appeared… training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives.”
— Titus 2:11–12

Grace teaches us to turn away from sin and to desire what honors God.

The change may not happen quickly. There may be habits we struggle with, weaknesses that remain, and seasons when growth seems slow. Yet God is still at work.

“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
— Philippians 1:6

Our confidence is not in our ability to make ourselves better. Our confidence is in the faithfulness of God to complete what He has begun.

Grace Sustains Us in Weakness

There are moments when we feel strong and confident, but there are also seasons when we become painfully aware of our limitations.

Paul knew this experience. When he pleaded with God concerning his weakness, the Lord answered:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9

God does not always remove the difficult road. Sometimes His grace gives us strength to keep walking through it.

There will be prayers we do not fully understand, disappointments we did not expect, and circumstances beyond our control. Yet the sufficiency of God’s grace does not depend on the ease of our situation.

His grace remains enough.

Grace Keeps Us

One of the greatest comforts of the Christian faith is knowing that God does not begin His work in His people only to abandon them.

Jesus said:

“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
— John 10:28

Our faith may sometimes feel weak. Our emotions may change. Our circumstances may become uncertain. But God’s faithfulness does not change.

The believer’s hope is not ultimately in the strength of our grip on Christ, but in the strength of His grip on us.

Looking Back, We See Grace

As the years pass, we begin to recognize things we could not see clearly before.

We see doors God closed, prayers He answered differently, trials that produced maturity, and moments when we almost gave up but somehow continued.

And we realize:

It was grace.

Not luck.
Not a coincidence.
Not our own strength.

Grace.

Looking Forward, We Trust Grace

We do not know everything that lies ahead, but we know the God who leads us.

The Christian life begins with grace, continues by grace, and will one day be completed by grace.

“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”
— Romans 11:36

This is our journey:

Saved by grace.
Sustained by grace.
Changed by grace.
Kept by grace.
And one day, brought safely home by grace.
